In a tense encounter captured on video, Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman was approached by a journalist from The Rooster, an independent Ohio-based political blog, regarding campaign donations from Columbus billionaire Leslie Wexner. The incident, which unfolded in a public building, highlights ongoing questions about political funding tied to Wexner, who was recently deposed by members of Congress in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.
The video, posted on X by @Juicewag, an account associated with The Rooster, shows the journalist questioning Huffman about approximately $44,000 in contributions from Wexner and his wife Abigail since 2008. Campaign finance records reviewed by multiple outlets, including WSYX and the Ohio Capital Journal, confirm that Huffman received $20,000 from the Wexners between 2021 and 2022. The journalist pressed Huffman on whether he planned to return the funds, referencing the Epstein files and Wexner’s long-standing association with the late sex offender. Huffman did not respond substantively and quickly moved toward an elevator.
As the journalist attempted to follow, a man identifying himself as a police officer intervened, stating, “You’ll have to wait right here or meet you upstairs.” The journalist asserted his right to enter, but the officer blocked access, describing the area as a “security zone” and instructing him to step back. No physical altercation occurred, and the exchange remained verbal. The officer emphasized his authority, saying, “I’m a police officer so just stand back.” The journalist complied, later explaining to the camera that Huffman was avoiding questions about the donations.
This confrontation comes amid heightened scrutiny of Wexner’s political giving. Ohio’s wealthiest individual, Wexner has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to candidates across party lines in recent years, according to state and federal records from the Ohio Secretary of State and OpenSecrets. Recipients include Huffman, Governor Mike DeWine, U.S. Senator Jon Husted, and others. In light of Wexner’s February 18, 2026, deposition by five Democratic members of the U.S. House Oversight Committee regarding his ties to Epstein, several Ohio politicians have distanced themselves from the funds. For instance, Senate President Rob McColley donated $5,000 received in 2024 to charity, while U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno has stated he will not return $3,500 from Wexner, calling it unsolicited.
Huffman, a Republican from Lima who previously served as Senate President, declined to comment on campaign matters inside the Statehouse when asked by Spectrum News about the donations. “I’m pretty sure I’m not allowed to talk about campaigns and politics inside the state capitol,” he said. His office did not respond to requests for further comment on the incident.
The Rooster, run by Columbus-based writer D.J. Byrnes, is known for its critical coverage of Ohio politics, often targeting both Republicans and Democrats. The blog’s original X account was suspended on January 29, 2026, following a post criticizing U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in relation to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement incident. Byrnes confirmed the ban in a WOSU report, noting the blog continues on Substack and other platforms like Instagram.
Under Ohio law, journalists have the right to access public spaces and question officials, provided they do not interfere with operations or violate security protocols. Legal experts note that elevators in government buildings are generally considered public unless designated otherwise, but officers may restrict access for safety reasons. No charges have been filed related to this encounter, and it remains unclear if any formal complaint was lodged.
This event underscores broader concerns about transparency in campaign financing and the influence of high-profile donors in Ohio politics. As the Epstein probe continues, more politicians may face similar public reckonings. South Central Ohio residents, many of whom rely on state leadership for issues like education funding and infrastructure, are watching closely for developments.
