Southern Ohio High Schoolers: Compete for $250,000 in Scholarships in the Presidential 1776 Award Civics Challenge

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon has launched the Presidential 1776 Award, a national scholarship competition for high school students that tests knowledge of American founding history and civics as the nation prepares to mark its 250th birthday in 2026.

The program, announced by the U.S. Department of Education on December 15, 2025, offers a total of $250,000 in scholarships to the top three finishers. It is open to students in grades 9–12 who are U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents living in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or U.S. territories.

Competition Structure and Timeline

The contest unfolds in three rounds:

Round 1 (Online Qualifying): Students take “The Impossible Civics Test,” a 90-minute, electronically proctored, multiple-choice exam during the window of February 22–28, 2026. The test covers the Founders, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitutional Convention, and the Revolutionary War. Registration is open now through February 21, 2026, at presidential1776award.org. The top four scorers from each state (plus two alternates) advance.

Round 2 (Regional Semifinals): In-person short-answer competitions in five regions, scheduled for May 2026.

Round 3 (National Final): A televised in-person event in Washington, D.C., at the end of June 2026.

Scholarships are awarded as follows: first place receives $150,000, second place $75,000, and third place $25,000. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation independently develops the questions and serves as judges. A free digital study library and other preparation resources are available on the official site.

Secretary McMahon stated in the official announcement: “What better way to get our students excited about learning more of our nation’s deep and rich history than a friendly competition meant to challenge high schoolers to show off their knowledge of our great nation’s founding ideals? … Game on!”

Opportunity for Ross County and Southern Ohio Students

High school students in Ross County and adjacent southern Ohio counties are fully eligible to participate. The Ohio Department of Education has highlighted the program to educators and students statewide, noting its focus on strengthening knowledge of American history and civics.
