Ross County Sheriff George W. Lavender Jr. issued a news release on February 26, 2026, detailing a series of seven bomb threats against the Huntington Local School District since January 13, 2026. All threats, including the most recent one on February 25, 2026, have been investigated and determined to be hoaxes. The sheriff emphasized that student and staff safety remains the top priority in Ross County, located in south central Ohio, where such disruptions have impacted education in the Chillicothe area and beyond.
In response, the Ross County Sheriff’s Office has enlisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation early in the probe, with daily efforts underway to identify and prosecute those responsible for what Lavender called “sickening crimes.” The office has also collaborated with the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office, Ohio Department of Homeland Security, Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and various state and local agencies to safeguard schools.
To deter further incidents, increased law enforcement presence is now visible around all Ross County schools, including Huntington Local, aiming to maintain a secure learning environment without interruptions.
Southern Ohio Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 740-773-8477.
