Iranian IRGC Agent Convicted in Terror Plot to Assassinate US Officials, Including Trump

A federal jury has convicted Asif Merchant, an Iranian intelligence operative linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), on charges of murder for hire and attempting to commit an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries. The conviction stems from a foiled plot to assassinate U.S. politicians and government officials, with evidence presented at trial indicating that former President Donald Trump was a primary target. Merchant, who arrived in the United States in April 2024, was arrested in July 2024 before he could flee the country, preventing any attacks from occurring. The case highlights ongoing threats from foreign terrorist organizations targeting American democracy, as Merchant admitted during the trial that he was sent by the IRGC to orchestrate political assassinations and steal sensitive documents.

Details of the plot reveal a multi-faceted scheme involving document theft, organizing protests, and targeted killings. Merchant, after receiving training in Pakistan in late 2022 or early 2023, traveled repeatedly to Iran to coordinate with his IRGC handler. In the U.S., he recruited individuals he believed to be hitmen in New York during June 2024, but these were undercover law enforcement officers. He paid them a $5,000 advance for the assassination and discussed security measures at political rallies, even conducting internet searches on rally locations to report back to his handlers. The plot was disrupted when an acquaintance alerted authorities, leading to Merchant’s arrest on July 12, 2024, just before his planned departure.

Merchant’s background underscores the IRGC’s global reach, as he began working for the organization in 2022-2023 and was tasked with recruiting agents in the U.S. starting in 2023. By 2024, his mission escalated to include assassinations of specific U.S. officials. Facing up to life in prison, Merchant’s conviction marks a significant victory for U.S. counterterrorism efforts. The investigation involved multiple FBI field offices, including those in Dallas, Houston, and New York, along with support from the New York City Police Department and other agencies.

Officials praised the swift action that thwarted the threat. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that the Department of Justice remains vigilant in protecting Americans and prosecuting terrorists. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the FBI’s commitment to detecting and preventing acts of violence, noting this was not Iran’s first attempt to harm U.S. citizens. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg highlighted the plot’s attack on democracy, while United States Attorney Nocella for the Eastern District of New York affirmed the office’s mission to counter foreign adversaries.
