In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking in south central Ohio, the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office announced a successful seizure of illegal drugs during a routine traffic stop on March 16, 2026. The operation, part of a broader effort to combat drug distribution in the region, underscores the ongoing commitment of local law enforcement to safeguarding communities along the U.S. Route 23 corridor.

Sheriff Matt Champlin detailed the incident in an official statement, highlighting the collaborative work of the U.S. 23 Major Crimes Task Force. “This afternoon, a multi-jurisdictional effort involving members of the U.S. 23 Major Crimes Task Force resulted in the seizure of narcotics during a traffic stop in Gallia County,” Champlin said. “The narcotics were being transported from a known source city and were destined for distribution within our community.” The stop was prompted by a positive alert from the sheriff’s office K-9 unit, which detected the presence of illegal substances.
Chief Deputy Chris Gruber praised the dedication of the involved officers. “The collaborative efforts of task force members to prevent these drugs from entering our community are impressive,” Gruber stated. “These law enforcement professionals are highly skilled and dedicated to protecting our region from those who seek to traffic illegal narcotics.”
