WEST PORTSMOUTH — A Columbus man is in the Scioto County Jail on first-degree felony drug charges after a traffic stop on State Route 73 Wednesday afternoon, according to the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says the stop came out of an investigation by the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force, working with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. At about 4:27 p.m. on October 21, troopers stopped a vehicle for traffic violations near mile marker 24 on State Route 73 in West Portsmouth. During the stop, troopers seized about 72 grams of suspected cocaine, with an estimated street value of $7,200.
Jimmy Lee Jones, 38, of Columbus, was arrested and charged with one count of trafficking in drugs and one count of possession of drugs. Both charges are first-degree felonies.
Jones was booked into the Scioto County Jail. His arraignment was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Thursday, October 22, in Portsmouth Municipal Court. The sheriff’s office says the case will go to the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office for presentation to a grand jury, which may consider additional charges.
Charges are allegations. Jones is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Sheriff David Thoroughman and Portsmouth Police Chief Debby Brewer ask anyone with information about drug activity to contact the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force tip line at (740) 354-3784 or by email at drugs@sciotocountysheriff.com. Information is kept confidential and anonymous.
