The Hopewell Mound Group was evacuated Wednesday morning after authorities responded to a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening suicide, according to Ross County Sheriff George W. Lavender Jr.
Lavender said deputies located the man inside a vehicle at the Hopewell Mound Group on Sulpher Lick Road. A weapon was reportedly present in the vehicle.
The park was evacuated and access was closed while authorities responded. Negotiators were called to the scene and established communication with the man.
According to Lavender, the man was detained peacefully at approximately 1:30 p.m. He was then transported to Adena Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
Lavender thanked the V.A. and Union Township fire departments, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the National Park Service for assisting with the response.
No additional details about the man’s identity or condition were released in the sheriff’s statement.
