CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio. A Circleville man faces felony charges in the February crash on Walnut Creek Pike that killed a Mt. Sterling grandmother after she pushed her young grandson out of harm’s way.
John F. Hill, 60, was indicted July 13, 2026, by a Pickaway County grand jury on one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony, and one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs of abuse, a first-degree misdemeanor. He was taken into custody the same day by Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office detectives and remains held in the Pickaway County Jail on a $100,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court.
The charges relate to the Feb. 27, 2026, crash at approximately 10 a.m. at 2611 Walnut Creek Pike. According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, Hill drove a 2025 white Nissan Sentra southbound on the roadway. The vehicle left the west side of the road near the 2661 address, crossed through two yards, and entered the driveway at 2611 Walnut Creek Pike. It struck a parked 2022 white Chevrolet Equinox, causing that vehicle to spin and pinning 52-year-old Laura J. Hammond of Mt. Sterling between the two vehicles. The Nissan came to rest after striking a tree on the south side of the property.
Just before impact, Hammond moved the young boy, her grandson, who had been playing in the driveway, to safety. The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office stated at the time that her quick action kept the child from being struck and more than likely saved his life. The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Circleville EMS to OhioHealth Berger Hospital for treatment.
Hammond was also transported by Circleville EMS to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Hill sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by Pickaway Township EMS to OhioHealth Berger Hospital, where the Ohio State Highway Patrol continued the investigation.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office led the crash investigation with assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Pickaway County Engineer’s Office, and fire and EMS personnel from Pickaway Township, Circleville, Harrison Township, and Scioto Township. Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey previously thanked those agencies for their response and support during both the initial incident and the subsequent investigation.
Hill is presumed innocent of all charges. The case will move forward in the Pickaway County court system beginning with the scheduled arraignment.
This development follows initial reports of the incident that focused on Hammond’s selfless actions in the driveway that day. The sheriff’s office described her response as a heroic effort that protected the child at the cost of her own life.
Local residents and officials have continued to honor Hammond’s memory in the months since the crash. The indictment marks a formal step in the legal process stemming from the February events on Walnut Creek Pike in southern Pickaway County.
Further updates are expected following the July 15 arraignment.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
