Melbourne Beach, Florida – In a scene straight out of a wildlife thriller, a massive 410-pound adult male manatee, affectionately nicknamed “Melby,” was dramatically rescued from a cramped storm drain baffle box after seeking refuge in warmer waters.
The gentle giant, measuring nearly 7 feet long, was spotted by a city surveyor during routine improvements to the storm drain system along Melbourne Beach. “We’re in the process of improving the storm drain across Melbourne Beach. Our people were doing a survey. And one of the surveyors noticed a manatee in what is called a baffle box,” explained Vice Mayor Terry Cronin.
What followed was a multi-agency effort spanning hours on February 9-11, 2026, involving Brevard County Fire Rescue, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, University of Florida experts, and even Jack’s Wrecker Service. Fire crews and wildlife teams carefully extracted the hefty sea cow from its concrete trap under the cover of night.
Once freed, Melby was swiftly transported to SeaWorld Orlando’s renowned rehabilitation facility – the largest manatee rescue center in Florida, which has saved 56 manatees last year alone. There, the manatee is thriving. SeaWorld spokesperson Stephanie Bechara shared a positive update: “He’s breathing on his own, moving independently, and showing interest in food. Our teams are adjusting water levels to support buoyancy and comfort as part of his care.” The plan? Full recovery followed by a return to the wild.
This rescue comes amid ongoing manatee conservation efforts in Florida, where the species is rebounding from a devastating 2021 mass starvation event that claimed over 1,100 lives. Deaths have since dropped significantly.
The heartwarming story first went viral via Dexerto’s X post (formerly Twitter), featuring striking close-up photos of Melby peering out from his storm drain prison – credited to photographer Robbie King.
Melby’s mishap is a reminder of Florida’s unique wildlife challenges – and the heroic humans who step up to save them.
